Professional Resources

If you work in the fields of healthcare, education, social work, religion or the judicial system, Al-Anon is a support network of families and friends of alcoholics who can complement and support your work with family or friends struggling with someone else’s alcoholism.

Alcoholism is not simply an issue of excessive drinking; it is a disease that affects the drinker as well as the family and friends, and the effect can manifest itself spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Often it manifests in severe consequences for family members. Many times, neither the family nor the alcoholic can see the correlation between drinking and the family’s problems.  If you suspect the individual you’re trying to help has been affected by another’s alcoholism, we suggest you or your client contact Al-Anon Family Groups.

Al-Anon is a mutual support group of peers who share their experience in applying the Al-Anon principles to problems related to the effects of a problem drinker in their lives. It is not group therapy and is not led by a counselor or therapist. This support network complements and supports professional treatment.

Alateen is a peer support group for teens who are struggling with the effects of someone else’s drinking. Alateen meetings are open only to teenagers. Alateen is not for young people seeking sobriety.  If you are helping a teen who is affected by a family member's alcoholism, we encourage you to recommend Alateen.
